Should Dallas Mavericks pass or pursue on hypothetical trade?: 3. Get Will Barton

Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale outlined one trade every team could make this offseason. Here is the move he listed for the Mavs.

Dallas would likely be buying low on Barton. He averaged 12.7 points, 4.0 rebounds. 3.2 assists, and 0.9 steals in 31.0 minutes per game. The 30-year-old can handle the ball, make simple plays, and is an above-average 3-point shooter.

There would be worries, though. Barton has played 58 games or fewer in each of the last three seasons. He missed time in the playoffs in both 2020 and 2021. The injuries and statistical fluctuation could become massive issues.

The Mavericks traded for Josh Richardson last offseason. He is another player with variable production, and Dallas got the worst of it. Going back to that well with Will Barton could be a mistake.

Verdict: Dallas Mavericks should pass on Will Barton trade

The Mavs should avoid giving up Josh Richardson, Tyrell Terry, and a second-round pick for Barton. His injury history and inconsistency are not what Dallas needs. Terry showed plenty of promise inside the G League bubble. The Mavericks will not be able to trade Richardson, unless he opts in. The move seems a bit too risky with no guarantee that Barton meshes into the role player the Dallas Mavericks need.
