Dallas Mavericks best coaching replacement for Rick Carlisle: 2. Mike D’Antoni

If the Mavs want an experienced head coach, there may be no better option than D’Antoni. He led the Rockets to the playoffs four straight years from 2017 to 2020 in his last stint in charge. D’Antoni is currently an assistant with the Brooklyn Nets, but many expect to land another head coaching gig shortly.

D’Antoni is known as one of the best offensive coaches in the league. He helped Steve Nash win two MVP awards as the point guard for the “Seven Seconds or Less” Suns. D’Antoni has been a head coach for 16 seasons in the NBA and has made the playoffs ten times.

It would be interesting to see what the 70-year-old could do with the Dallas Mavericks offense. D’Antoni has been known to maximize his lead ball-handler, which would mean monster numbers for Luka Doncic.

There would be some worry about the defense, though. The Mavs finished 21st in defensive rating this season, and that has always been the one knock on D’Antoni. Dallas may be better served hiring a defensive-minded coach that is going to try to maximize the Mavericks on that end of the floor.

If owner Mark Cuban and the soon-to-be hired president of basketball operations want an experienced coach, they could turn to Mike D’Antoni to lead the team next season.
