Dallas Mavericks must add a secondary ball-handler heading into next season

The Dallas Mavericks have struggled mightily when Luka Doncic is off of the court. They just can’t seem to hold onto leads, let alone comeback when he is on the bench during his scheduled breaks. The Mavs were outscored by 43 points during the 55 minutes Luka was on the sidelines during their seven-game playoffs series. They won the 281 minutes with Luka on the court by seven.

They are needing a secondary ball-handler and shot creator. Many believed it would be third-year guard Jalen Brunson, but he struggled in the playoffs becoming a non-factor. At one point, Rick decided to go to Trey Burke instead of Brunson, and that is not an ideal situation for a team with championship hopes.

Luckily for the Mavs, there are options in free agency, whether that be a Demar DeRozan type, Kyle Lowry, or even restricted free agent Lonzo Ball. All three would be a substantial upgrade over what they currently have on their roster.

The only thing for certain is that the Dallas Mavericks cannot go into next season to win a championship in mind without having a secondary shot creator. Luka is a superstar, but he has been known to wear down late in games. Having someone to help shoulder the load should do wonders for him and the team in crunch time.
