Do the Dallas Mavericks need a third star to become title contenders?

It is no secret that the Mavs have been searching for a third star since the offseason. It is possible to win a title with two, but having three elite players lifts the team to another level.

Given the current landscape, the Mavericks likely need a third star to top the Lakers and Nets. LeBron James and Anthony Davis are two of the top ten players in the league when healthy. It will be difficult to put together a duo that defeats them in a seven-game series. Brooklyn has three legitimate stars in Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving. Dallas would need a third star to be on par with those teams.

The Mavericks would love to add a second star. Kristaps Porzingis can be the third-best player on a title team without question. If Dallas could acquire Bradley Beal or another All-Star starter, they would be on par with the best teams in the league.

For Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis to win without a third star, the Dallas Mavericks would need multiple rotation upgrades. It would take having a couple of third-best players on a championship team to make it a reality. They would have to be perfect fits for what Dallas needs too.
