Dallas Mavericks: Grading the entire team going into the All-Star break
By Tyler Watts
Dallas Mavericks grade going into All-Star break: James Johnson
Johnson gives the Mavs a different look. He can handle the ball, make plays, and drive to the basket. Coach Rick Carlisle was forced to overextend Johnson’s minutes as the Mavericks dealt with COVID issues. The 34-year-old has returned to more of a change of pace role during Dallas’ recent hot streak.
First-half grade for Dallas Mavericks forward James Johnson: C+
Johnson needs to improve his outside shooting and lock in on the defensive end to earn more minutes in the second half of the season.
Dallas Mavericks grade going into All-Star break: Dwight Powell
Powell has played well in spurts after recovering from Achilles surgery. The 29-year-old brings energy and effort to the court. Coach Rick Carlisle has done well using him in advantageous situations. His athletic ability and foot speed are still not back to preinjury form.
First-half grade for Dallas Mavericks big man Dwight Powell: C
Expect Powell to continue to improve as his strength and conditioning. The 6’10 big man will keep bringing energy and effort off the bench, and he could be a key role player for Dallas in the playoffs if the matchups dictate it.
