Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic took a massive leap on defense
Luka’s biggest gains have come on the defensive end of the floor. Coach Rick Carlisle had to hide the 6’7 star on a lesser matchup early in his career, but that is no longer the case. He has routinely made plays on the defensive end this season including stuffing a Jimmy Butler drive early in the season.https://videos.nba.com/nba/pbp/media/2021/01/01/0022000071/328/001c446d-272e-ae87-97bd-4a5a1d41c401_1280x720.mp4
Doncic has always been a positive rebounder, but his defense is a work in progress. He is more engaged on that end of the floor and taking on any matchup.
Luka is by no means a plus defender. He has gone from well below-average to average. Expect him to continue improving. Doncic has the size and skill to be a plus option. He needs to lock in and bring more effort in uncomfortable areas. The Mavs do not need him to be elite. Luka has to be able to hold his own against switches in the playoffs, and now that should not be an issue.
Luka Doncic is considerably better this season. Some of his numbers may be down, but the eye test does not lie. Expect him to continue improving. Continue watching for what the 22-year-old can add to his game next as he attempts to become the best player in NBA.
