Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic added a mid-range game
Last season, every shot from Luka was in the paint or a 3-pointer. He took 57 mid-range shots in his 1,255 field goal attempts. Doncic is an elite finisher at the rim, has a strong floater, and stretches the defense with his step back threes. He was one of the best scorers in the league before adding a counter to his game that makes him unstoppable.
Luka has taken 91 mid-range shots in his first 31 games this season. He is shooting 45.1 percent on those attempts. Doncic has done it in two ways.
He avoids shot blockers by pulling up and hitting a wide-open attempt in the mid-range. Instead of challenging Clint Capela, Luka forces him to commit on the drive and takes an uncontested jumper.https://videos.nba.com/nba/pbp/media/2021/02/03/0022000330/375/fd8539e7-5bbb-aa92-201d-45bae04cd078_1280x720.mp4
Doncic is also posting up more this season. He has always produced outstanding numbers on post ups, but Luka is now doing it 1.7 possessions per game. He takes smaller players down to the block and creates an easy bucket. The Mavericks superstar added the Dirk Nowitzki one-legged fade away to create space too.https://videos.nba.com/nba/pbp/media/2021/01/01/0022000071/408/661c39b6-a596-19bf-106e-93c76f5f0579_1280x720.mp4
Luka’s mid-range game gives him another area that he can attack. It should come in handy in clutch situations when defenses tighten up. Doncic can make a shot from anywhere on the floor, and he is utilizing that skill more this season.
