Gauging the value of Dallas Mavericks star Kristaps Porzingis based on his production

KP’s production is difficult to match. Only 27 players in the league averaged over 20 points per game last season. He was 16th in rebounds per game and shot the third-highest 3-point percentage of anyone ranked inside the top 20 that took over one attempt per game. Porzingis finished sixth in blocks per game too.

The Unicorn is producing strong numbers this season, but his defense has been problematic. It is dangerous to dig too deeply into a 17-game sample, especially one that features a handful of games with multiple rotation players out in the health and safety protocols, though.

The 25-year-old is an elite talent. Having a 7’3 big man that can space the floor, protect the rim, and score at an elite rate is a unique advantage. There is a reason it cost the Mavericks two first-round picks including an unprotected one in 2021, plus recent lottery choice Dennis Smith Jr. to acquire KP in 2019. Getting a young elite big man is expensive.

Porzingis’ value has dropped since the Dallas Mavericks acquired him. He was on his rookie deal when the Mavs made the trade, but they inked him to a five-year max contract six months later. KP has struggled to stay healthy too. He had another knee surgery in 2020. So what is the Unicorn’s value when factoring in his contract and injury history?
