The Dallas Mavericks are off to a slow start. They have won just eight of their first 21 games, despite Luka Doncic putting up incredible numbers. The Mavs faced the misfortune of injuries, COVID protocols, and a road-heavy schedule, but simply, they have not played well enough. Fans are hoping that turns around with a healthy roster and an upcoming seven-game homestand, but what if it does not?
The Mavericks do not want to waste a season of Luka Doncic. The plan is to build a championship contender around the superstar for the next decade-plus. Dallas focused on improving their defense, but they may need more shooting and offensive firepower to jump into title contention.
Expect GM Donnie Nelson and the front office to be aggressive in improving the roster before the trade deadline. One name that has been connected to the Mavs is Zach LaVine. Could they trade for the Bulls guard?
Could the Dallas Mavericks acquire Zach LaVine?
The Mavs do not have a ton of draft capital available to trade. They owe their 2021 first-round pick and their 2023 first that is protected to the Knicks from the Kristaps Porzingis trade. Dallas would need to remove the protection to deal their 2025 first-rounder before the deadline.
It is no secret that the Mavericks want a third star. They would need to offer at least two first-rounders plus multiple swaps to jump into the conversation on any All-Star. LaVine’s value may be slightly below that and directly in Dallas’ price range.
Here are five reasons why the Dallas Mavericks should trade for Zach LaVine.
