Dallas Mavericks second unit

The second unit appears sorted out. Coach Carlisle is going to use Tim Hardaway Jr. as the sixth man with a strong mix of options off the bench.

Sixth Man: Tim Hardaway Jr.

THJ shifted into his new role and immediately responded with 18 points plus a strong defensive game. He played 31 minutes on Monday night and gives Dallas the flexibility to match up against any opponent.

PG: Jalen Brunson

Do not look now, but Brunson is having a breakout third season. He is averaging 11.5 points and 3.4 assists per game on 50.7 percent shooting from the field and 39.1 percent on his threes. JB will be the primary ball-handler in the second unit as he continues to improve.

SG: Trey Burke

Burke only played three minutes on Monday night. His spot in the rotation will depend on matchups. Burke is a bucket getter, but Hardaway Jr. could take his minutes in the second unit. Keep an eye on his playing time going forward.

PF: James Johnson

Johnson was limited to just six minutes against the Suns. The 6’7 forward has played well when given an extended run but is best suited for playing ten to 15 minutes per night. Expect his time to remain fluid.

C: Willie Cauley-Stein

Cauley-Stein has earned the backup center spot ahead of Dwight Powell. He brings energy but needs to stay locked in during his time on the court.
