Dallas Mavericks: Starting Willie Cauley-Stein unlocks the Mavs potential
By Jeffrey Chang
Dallas Mavericks big man Willie Cauley-Stein can thrive as a starter
Willie Cauley-Stein is currently operating on a 12.4 percent usage rate but continues to contribute across the board. His low usage bodes well for an offensive system that hinges on the Mavericks’ two pivotal All-Stars.
It’s still a small sample size, but the Mavericks are rolling since plugging Willie Cauley-Stein into the starting lineup. The Mavericks started the season 2-4 before winning four straight. This isn’t entirely because of Trill, but he is a significant X-factor.
Expect coach Rick Carlisle to continue using this lineup. He may go back to mixing and matching the lineup once Powell and Kleber return. Right now, Willie Cauley-Stein has an opportunity to cement his starting role. He needs to keep up the energy and stand out on both ends of the floor.
The Dallas Mavericks are playing counter to the league-wide use of small ball lineups by having two seven-footers share the floor. Mark my words, having Willie Cauley-Stein start next to Kristaps Porzingis is the key to fully unlocking the potential of this years’ Dallas Mavericks team.
