Dallas Mavericks: Examining the depth chart to start 2020-2021 regular season
By Tyler Watts
Dallas Mavericks depth chart to start regular season: Small forward
The Mavs have interchangeable options at the two and three. Both Tyler Bey and Nate Hinton could see minutes on the wing as well.
Starter: Tim Hardaway Jr.
THJ is locked in as a starter after his incredible performance last season. He averaged 17.1 points on 45.0 percent shooting from the field in his 58 starts for the Mavericks. Hardaway Jr. will play 30 to 35 minutes a night as the team’s unquestioned starter this season.
Backup: Josh Green
Green played with the second unit during all three preseason games. The Mavs 2020 first-round pick is a strong defender with a developing offensive game. He will need to consistently knock down open looks to stay ahead of Iwundu in the team’s rotation this season.
Third-string: Wesley Iwundu
The Mavericks signed Iwudu to a two-year veteran minimum deal this offseason. He is off to a slow start after missing some time because of novel coronavirus protocols. Expect him to be ready for the regular-season opener, though. Iwundu gives Dallas another plus defensive option at either wing spot this season.
Coach Carlisle has options here. Both Green and Iwudu could be out of the rotation some nights if they decide to play Dorian Finney-Smith more minutes at the three. Expect Hardaway Jr. to consistently play 30-plus, but the backup minutes will be matchup dependent.
