Dallas Mavericks depth chart at the start of training camp: Power forward

Starter: Dorian Finney-Smith

Finney-Smith is the first starter that is not locked into the lineup. Coach Carlisle will play the matchups, especially with Kristaps Porzingis out. That could mean Maxi Kleber stepping in if the opposing team is starting two traditional big men. DFS will play plenty of minutes at both forward spots this season.

Finney-Smith needs to maintain his 3-point shooting gains from last year for Dallas to take the next step. Expect him to be up to the challenge.

Backup: Maxi Kleber

Kleber’s outstanding defense both inside and out, plus his improving 3-point shot will earn him significant minutes this season. The Mavs have plenty of frontcourt depth, but his unique skill set stands out. The 28-year-old will be a key piece of the rotation throughout the year.

Third-string: James Johnson

The Mavs wanted to add a player that would stand up for Luka Doncic if the other team was taking some cheap shots at him because of what the Clippers did in the playoffs. Johnson brings that. The 33-year-old is a skilled martial artist that will have Doncic and the rest of the Mavericks’ backs.

Johnson was outstanding over the final 14 games of last season too. Do not be surprised to see him sneak into the rotation because he is a big man that can handle the ball, shoot, and get some buckets off the bench.
