Dallas Mavericks depth chart at the start of training camp: Small forward

Starter: Tim Hardaway Jr.

Some fans may be surprised to see Hardaway Jr. at this position, but he played 57 percent of his minutes here last season, according to Basketball-Reference. The 28-year-old will be looking to prove his outstanding season with the Mavs in 2020 was no fluke.

Dallas is going to need more from THJ at the start of the season. He will be their second scorer with Kristaps Porzingis on the sidelines. Expect Hardaway Jr. to answer the call.

Backup: Josh Green

The Mavericks first-round pick could be in the rotation on opening night. He was an outstanding perimeter defender during his lone college season. Green will be a spot-up shooter in the Mavs offense but could make a massive impact on the other end. Expect some rookie growing pains from the 20-year-old.

Third-string: Wesley Iwundu

Iwundu signed a two-year deal with the Mavericks this offseason. He started 21 games for the Orlando Magic in 2020. The 25-year-old is a defensive-minded wing that could thrive in Dallas. The Mavs have helped a lot of role players improve their jumpers. Iwundu could be the next in the list as he turns into a 3-and-D option every team covets. First, he will have to top J.J. Barea for the team’s final roster during training camp.

The Dallas Mavericks improved their wing depth and defense this offseason, which should pay dividends in the 2021 playoffs.
