Dallas Mavericks: Resetting the depth chart heading into training camp
By Tyler Watts
Dallas Mavericks depth chart at the start of training camp: Shooting guard
Starter: Josh Richardson
It may be easiest for fans to look at these next two positions together because most of the players are interchangeable. Richardson got the nod as the starting two because he played 73 percent of his minutes at this position last season, according to Basketball-Reference.
The 27-year-old will be the Mavs defensive stopper. He will be asked to guard the opposition’s number one perimeter offensive threat every night. Richardson is a two-way player, though. Expect him to be a floor spacer, secondary creator, and capable scorer in the Mavericks high powered offense. Fans will fall in love with the 6’5 wing’s game.
Sixth man: Trey Burke
Burke has played almost exclusively point guard in his career, but the Mavericks will likely have him in more of a sixth man role this season. He and Brunson will share the ball in the second unit with Burke placed in a more score-first role. That earned him the shooting guard tag here. Expect Burke to share the court with Luka too. That duo played well together during the Walt Disney World restart and should continue to do so in the year ahead.
Third-string: Tyrell Terry
Terry is a fantastic shooter but will struggle to get minutes this season. Expect the Mavericks to continue developing his body and working on his overall game. Terry could be a key rotation player in a few years, but opportunities will be limited unless injuries strike this season.
