Dallas Mavericks: Resetting the depth chart heading into training camp
By Tyler Watts
Dallas Mavericks depth chart at the start of training camp: Point guard
Starter: Luka Doncic
Doncic is the MVP favorite heading into the season. The 21-year-old led the Mavs to the highest offensive rating in NBA history in 2020. Fans will see the best version yet in his third season. Expect Luka to be pushing a 30-point triple-double per game as the Mavericks take another leap.
Backup: Jalen Brunson
Brunson will be looking to take another step forward in his third NBA season. The 24-year-old competes hard and can run the Mavs offense. Expect him to led the second unit, but playing more next to Luka will be the key to increasing his minutes.
Third-string: J.J. Barea
Barea is back with the Mavericks on a guaranteed contract. The team has given out 16 of them heading into training camp. It will be a battle for the final spot between Barea and Wesley Iwundu. The veteran point guard is a leader and mentor, even if he is not earning minutes. Barea will not be in the nightly rotation barring injury, but he could offer the Mavs a lot this season.
Point guard is the Dallas Mavericks most locked in position. Luka Doncic will play about 35 minutes every game with Jalen Brunson taking up the remaining 13. Getting Brunson next to Doncic in lineups will be the key to him playing 20-plus during the 2020-2021 campaign.
