Dallas Mavericks guard Tyrell Terry’s weaknesses

Terry gets knocked for his questionable assist-to-turnover ratio (3.6 assists to 2.6 turnovers) and his on-ball defense against taller guards. Being undersized, opposing screens from bigs can catch him off guard.

Multiple draft experts stated his need to improve his off-hand. He is much weaker when forced to drive left. Terry also has issues when it comes to finishing through contact due to his strength.

The 20-year-old below 30 percent from most mid-range areas last season. He also cannot create his own shot despite having a decent handle and a quick release. His isolation game needs improvement.

Terry becomes a defensive liability when facing guards who play with physicality or have bursts of speed. He may have active hands and good length, but that means nothing if he cannot stay in front of his man and contain their dribble.

Terry’s athleticism is also a concern. He has a tendency to get beat off-ball and his lateral speed on defense is a weakness. This same athleticism prevents him from consistently attacking the rim and keeps him content with shooting from distance.

Lastly, Terry does not have a reliable step-back or space creating dribble moves. He is a dynamic shooter with help but opposing defenses can just choose to close out on him or hedge the screen to force him into less comfortable looks.
