Dallas Mavericks rumors: J.J. Barea returning to the roster?

The Dallas Mavericks continue to fill out their roster. Dallas re-signed Trey Burke and traded for James Johnson on Friday. It gives the Mavs six additions this week with the focus of improving their defense and adding toughness to the roster.

The Mavericks have two roster spots left to fill. They will be searching for veterans that can bring leadership and play an effective role when called upon. One of those remaining spots could be filled by a Mavs legend.

Rumors suggest J.J. Barea could be re-signed by the Mavericks. Let us take a closer look at the report.

Rumors: J.J. Barea returning to the Dallas Mavericks?

Brad Townsend dropped the knowledge on Saturday afternoon. See his tweet below.

Barea was reportedly unhappy with his role last season, but fans know the Mavericks are one of the most loyal organizations in professional sports. They were going to offer Barea a veteran-minimum contract if he wanted to continue playing. The 36-year-old will be a depth piece for the team.

Expect him to play a role comparable to the one he filled last season. The Mavs have Luka Doncic as the starting point guard with Jalen Brunson and Trey Burke backing up. Barea would be fourth in that pecking order. Coach Rick Carlisle will insert him when the Mavericks need an offensive spark.

Note, this is not a done deal. It is just a rumor, but expect Barea to be re-signed before training camp opens on Dec. 1.

That still leaves one roster spot and a chunk of their mid-level exception. Expect the Mavericks to wait a bit in hopes of landing a solid veteran on a discount. No word yet on who they are targeting. Check back to The Smoking Cuban for all the latest Dallas Mavericks news, rumors, and analysis.
