Why Dallas Mavericks should do the deal for Dennis Schroder

The main reason to do the deal outlined on All Things Mavs is to acquire Schroder. Trey Burke was outstanding for Dallas during the Walt Disney World restart, and Schroder would be an upgrade on Burke. Some would call it a significant upgrade. The Thunder guard’s speed and ability to score inside would give the Mavericks offense a few new dimensions.

Dallas loves this trade because it moves Justin Jackson and Delon Wright too. Both players fell out of the Mavericks rotation in the playoffs. Wright just finished the first season of a three-year $27 million deal, but he fit in Dallas has not worked. It may be best for both parties to move on and allow Wright to get more minutes elsewhere. Jackson’s place in the league hinges on how he performs in the 2020-2021 season. Unless he improves, the 25-year-old could struggle to find a second NBA contract.

Dennis Schroder will be a free agent in the 2021 offseason, which means the Mavericks get a year with the 6’1 guard, but keep their options open going forward. It gives them the financial flexibility to create a max cap slot and chase the superstar free agents in 2021. That should not be a priority for Dallas, but it is a luxury.
