Dallas Mavericks 2020 NBA draft prospect Saddiq Bey: Weaknesses
The weaker parts of Bey’s game can be perplexing to the naked eye. Because he doesn’t have that explosive playmaker “I’m going to take the game over now” gene, it can only be expected that his downside depends on where he gets drafted and the players around him.
The most common criticism on Bey is that he is not the iso player that he perhaps could or should be with his size. He doesn’t have a particular knack for shot creation, and he loves to pass the ball a little too much. This knock would be much more frustrating if he was your main scoring dependency, but he is unlikely to be wherever he goes.
He is ball-happy without the flash, so you take what you get with his scoring. Bey’s athleticism is a huge plus, but his ball-handling and acceleration leave a lot to be desired. While he has size and speed, he doesn’t have the slick burst to get around defenders with ease, which in turn impacts how well he handles the ball.
Once again, this doesn’t seem to be a disastrous red flag considering he’s very attentive and knows where to distribute it. He will never be the primary option, even off the bench, so don’t consider it to be a weakness as much as a small dent in his athleticism.
Ultimately, his weaknesses will only be amplified depending on how well he adjusts under Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle. It is not concerning as a career killer but could be impacted by scheme. Bey should find a comfortable home in the NBA. He could improve those weak spots soon because he shined brightly and quickly at Villanova.
