Trade Dallas Mavericks could make this offseason: 1. Take Horford and picks

Usually, taking on cap space is not something an up and coming team hoping to compete for a championship would consider, but the Mavs need a tough veteran to significantly improve their team. Would it worth ruining cap space to add Al Horford?

The 34-year-old has three years and $81 million left on his deal which looks untradeable for Philly unless they attach draft pick compensation. Could Dallas be interested in that scenario?

Horford provides consistent defense, offensive creativity, veteran leadership, and toughness. He averaged 0.9 blocks and 0.8 steals per game in a limited role while also pouring in 11.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game this season. The Sixers want to clear some cap space, and if Tim Hardaway Jr. opts into his contract, the Mavericks would have a large expiring deal to offer.

Packaging THJ, Delon Wright, and Willie Cauley-Stein could be enough to get the Sixers to move Horford and a future first-round pick. Philadelphia needs off his contract to improve their roster around Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

The Dallas Mavericks currently have an incredible cap situation that would allow them to sign anyone they wanted in 2021. Free agents often do not come to Dallas, so saving money might be a waste. Mavs fans may be confused as to why the team would take on such a big contract, but trading for Horford and a draft pick poses a high risk, high-reward option for the next few years.
