Case for the Dallas Mavericks letting Michael Kidd-Gilchrist go in free agency

The number one reason would be upgrading the roster spot with a better fit. Dallas attempted the second-most 3-pointers in the NBA this season. Kidd-Gilchrist is a career 27.2 percent shooter from three and has taken just 103 in his eight-year NBA career. Yes, the Mavs need defensive help. Finding a player that better fits on both ends of the floor would be a plus, though.

Kidd-Gilchrist could get more than a minimum contract too. He made $13 million each of the last four seasons. The 26-year-old averaged less than 20 minutes per game for two straight years, but a market could develop in an uncertain free-agent class. The Mavericks should not eat into their mid-level exception to bring him back.

Kidd-Gilchrist would have to be willing to accept an end of the bench role too. He is going to be a did not play by coach’s decision some nights in Dallas. Is he alright with that role? MKG played it the last two seasons, but it was one of the reasons he wanted out of Charlotte. If he wants nightly playing time, the Mavericks may look elsewhere when filling their roster this offseason.
