Why the Dallas Mavericks should trade away Delon Wright

Wright signed a three-year $28 million deal with the Mavs before the 2019-2020 season. Many thought he would be the starter in the backcourt next to Luka Doncic. Wright only started five games this season. He played more than 30 minutes just four times.

The 28-year-old was the fifth-highest paid player on the Mavericks this season. He still has more than $17.5 million remaining on his contract. That is a high price for a player that slips out of the rotation in the playoffs. Wright could be a fantastic trade chip in matching salaries, though.

D-Wright could not have been happy with his role in the playoffs. He talked about wanting to be a starter with an expanded role when he signed with the Mavs. The 28-year-old may ask to move on to a team where he gets more playing time.

The fit just is not there next to Luka Doncic. Wright attempted just 1.7 3-pointers per game this season. He passed up multiple open shots. The Mavericks need shooters around Luka. That forces the defense to make difficult decisions. Wright never found that role as a secondary creator next to Doncic that Trey Burke did during the restart.

The fit and the contract should have the Dallas Mavericks looking for ways to make a move this offseason.
