How Victor Oladipo not playing impacts Dallas Mavericks: What it means going forward

The bigger picture may be most interesting to Mavs fans. Victor Oladipo has one season left on a four-year $84 million rookie extension that started in 2017. The 28-year-old is set to become a free agent in 2021.

The Pacers have a massive decision on their hands. Do they lock him up now? If Oladipo does not sign an extension in the abbreviated offseason after Orlando, will the Pacers try to trade him? He will be in a walk year. Indiana cannot afford to lose him without getting something in return.

The Mavericks could swoop in and make Oladipo their third star. It would be nice to see him fully healthy first, but a similar gamble paid off in the Kristaps Porzingis trade. Dallas would only be on the hook for next season if he was not healthy too. It would be an upside chance at putting yourself in title contention for the next five years.

Victor Oladipo will be joining the Pacers in Orlando. He will not play in games, but he wants to be with his team. Oladipo’s situation in Indiana is one worth monitoring this offseason and into the 2020-2021 season. The Mavericks could get the perfect opportunity to land him in the months ahead. Stay tuned.
