Why Dallas Mavericks should sign DeMarcus Cousins for NBA Disney
The Mavs will be without Dwight Powell in Orlando. He is still recovering from Achilles surgery. The 28-year-old hopes to be ready for the opening night of the 2020-2021 season.
The Mavericks traded for Willie Cauley-Stein after the injury. They also shifted to playing Kristaps Porzingis and Maxi Kleber more minutes at the five while going smaller.
DeMarcus Cousins would give the Mavs a different look. He is a scorer, rebounder, and playmaker. The 29-year-old creates instant offense whether he starts or comes off the bench. He is capable of creating for himself and others.
Coach Rick Carlisle could use him as the go-to scorer when both Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis are resting. Cousins averaged 16.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in 25.7 minutes per game with the Warriors during the 2018-2019 season.
Cousins best role is coming off the bench and getting buckets. The Mavericks could start Luka, KP, Seth Curry, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Tim Hardaway Jr. That gives them four floor spacers around Doncic. Cousins could come in and dominate the opposition’s second unit playing 25 minutes per game.
DeMarcus Cousins would be an upgrade for the Dallas Mavericks. Signing him is not a slam dunk case, though.
