Dallas Mavericks: Grading 2019-2020 season of Kristaps Porzingis
By Tyler Watts
Offense
Kristaps Porzingis took on a new role with the Dallas Mavericks. During his All-Star season in New York, he posted up 8.0 times per game. Coach Rick Carlisle and the Mavs limited those opportunities to 3.1 a night this season. He traded the post ups for 3-pointers. Porzingis set a new career-high attempting 7.1 per game.
KP was a bit rusty and trying to fit in to begin the year. In his first 31 games, he averaged 17.3 points, 1.5 assists, and 2.2 threes made in 31.2 minutes per game. Porzingis shot 40.3 percent from the field and 34.3 percent on his 3-pointers during that stretch.
Then, the Unicorn missed ten games with a knee injury. After five more contests of playing limited minutes, Porzingis took off. Over his final 15 games, he averaged 25.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 3.2 threes made in 33.7 minutes per game. This time, he shot 46.5 percent from the field and 36.4 percent on his 3-pointers.
It no secret that Zinger is one of the toughest covers in the NBA. Honestly, the production was likely to trend upward down the stretch. The chemistry between him and Luka Doncic was still growing. No team was looking forward to facing Dallas in the playoffs.
Offensive grade: B+
The slow start dings the grade a bit here. Porzingis showed how special he can be late in the season, though.
