Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic is in the running to win the Most Improved Player award this season. Is he leading the race? Here is a look at the top five.

The Dallas Mavericks are not sure what is going to happen with the rest of the 2019-2020 season. The NBA suspended play on March 11 because of the novel coronavirus. The season could be over. There is no definitive plan at this point.

If the season is over, that means the awards will be decided based on what we have already seen. Today, we will examine who will win the Most Improved Player this season.

It is one of the most difficult awards to determine a winner. There are a ton of different types of improvement. The hardest is reaching that elite level. The All-Star, All-NBA, or MVP tiers. Those leaps should be favored in looking at Most Improved, in my opinion.

Must Read. Is Luka Doncic the best young player in the NBA?

That puts Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic firmly in the running to take home the award. Is he the favorite? Who are the other candidates to win Most Improved Player? Here is my top five as things stand during the suspension.

Just missed

The two players just outside my top five were Duncan Robinson and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Robinson took the leap from the G-League to nightly starter and 3-point marksman on the Miami Heat. He was an afterthought before the season and ended up being an important piece on a would-be playoff-bound team.

SGA added 8.5 points per game to his scoring average. The second-year guard is averaging 19.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game on efficient shooting this season, but he just missed the cut.

Here is a look at the top five.
