3. DFS’s 3-point percentage
Dorian Finney-Smith excels on the defensive end of the floor. He is capable of guarding anyone on the court and makes life difficult on even the best scorers. The Mavericks loved his potential as a 3-and-D wing when they signed him in 2016.
The problem was his shooting. During his first three seasons, DFS hit 30.3 percent from downtown. He was connecting on 40.5 percent from the field and 72.6 percent of his free throws, so there did not seem to be a turnaround on the horizon.
This season, Finney-Smith has hit 38.2 percent of his 233 3-point attempts. It has made him a fixture in the starting five and allowed him to average a career-high in minutes per.
The offense has created an improvement for Doe-Doe. He is taking 3.3 wide open 3-point attempts per game according to NBA Stats. DFS is hitting them at 40.6 percent. He has never connected at anywhere near that rate before, but open shots are easier to convert. Luka Doncic finding him in the perfect spot also helps.
Dorian Finney-Smith might see a slight dip in his shooting percentages, but expect the gains to continue for the remainder of the season. The offense keeps creating wide open looks for the 26-year-old.
