4. Delon’s minutes

The Dallas Mavericks targeted restricted free agent Delon Wright last summer. They gave up two second round picks to secure his services from the Memphis Grizzlies in a sign-and-trade.

The move had Mavs fans thinking Wright would be the starting point guard. He seemed like a nice compliment to Luka in the backcourt. Wright was going to be the defensive anchor while Doncic ran the offense.

That has not been the case, though. D-Wright has started just four games all season. He has played almost exclusively with the second unit. Wright is averaging just 21.1 minutes per game on the year.

Fans should not be expecting a massive shift. His minutes vary each game, but he remains in that low-20’s range on average. Every time he plays 30, there is a night with 15 waiting in the wings. The Mavericks have a plethora of guard options, and they all limit the playing time of the others. Wright’s contributions are important. His defense makes a massive impact on a nightly basis, but Coach Carlisle has to get time for others too.

The 27-year-old signed a three-year deal with the Mavs in the offseason. It will be interesting to see if he is happy with his role moving into next season. Stay tuned on that.
