Dallas Mavericks: 5 best Mavs moments of the last decade
By Sean Bush
1. The Mavericks win their first NBA Championship
What else could it have possibly been? The Dallas Mavericks finally did it. Maybe the worst franchise in the ’90s. The team that lost in heartbreaking fashion to the Miami Heat in 2006 after opening up a 2-0 lead.
The team that was dubbed the “One and Done Boys” by some in the media after routine first-round exits following 2006. The team that won 67 games in 2007 just to get embarrassed by an eighth-seeded Warriors team.
The team that had only one All-Star player. The Mavs had their second or third best player (Caron Butler) lost for the season before the playoffs started. The team with not a single man who had won a title despite being loaded with veterans.
Most importantly, Dallas was led by a seven-foot foreign outside shooter who everyone labeled as too soft to win a championship. The Mavericks did it. They accomplished the feat in only six games against a super team. The won by ten in game 6 with 21 points and 11 rebounds from Dirk plus 27 from Terry.
It was a team effort with everyone contributing just as they had all playoffs to get them to that point. Dirk took off for the locker room right as the game ended because he could not hold in his emotions.
Dirk Nowitzki did it. He cemented his place in basketball immortality. He showed everyone that he could win his way. All of the extra work, heartbreak, and ups and downs were finally worth it.
The Dallas Mavericks were NBA Champions.
