5. Global popularity
Luka Doncic was a basketball star before he played a second in the NBA. He signed to play for Real Madrid in 2012 as a 13-year-old. Doncic quickly stood out on their age-level teams before making his debut with the senior club in 2015.
Luka became their rising star. From winning multiple MVP awards to helping Real Madrid win championships, everyone in Europe knew he was a basketball savant.
Doncic also helped his native Slovenia win EuroBasket 2017. It was the first major tournament the country ever won. He led the team along with Miami Heat guard Goran Dragic. Luka is a megastar in Slovenia. He plans on representing his country again this summer in hopes of qualifying them to play in the Olympics and ultimately bringing home a medal from Tokyo.
Doncic signed an endorsement deal with Nike as a teenager. After that expired, he was the most sought after free agent on the sneaker market. Ultimately, Jordan Brand won the bidding and has him under contract for the next five years.
Luka’s stellar play is quickly making him a star in the United States too. His worldwide notoriety will help him be the face of the NBA over the next decade. It should only grow each year as he continues to improve.
