NBA Draft: Where the Dallas Mavericks pick in the draft
By Kohl Rast
The Dallas Mavericks only have one selection in the 2019 NBA Draft and it is in the 2nd round. How did they get to this point and will there be any changes prior to the start of the draft?
When the clock strikes 6:00 this evening (central time), the 2019 NBA Draft will officially be underway. For fans just curious to see who the Dallas Mavericks get in the draft, you won’t have to tune in for some time as the Mavs possess only their own 2nd round pick this year.
Dallas would’ve had the 10th overall pick in the draft had they not traded the rights to the Atlanta Hawks last year in order to land Luka Doncic with the 3rd overall pick of the 2018 NBA Draft. There is no doubt that all Mavs fans would do this again in a heartbeat if asked.
Since Dallas does not possess their own first round pick, most of the known names will be off the board by the time they are making their pick. That can be a good thing or a bad thing, we will just have to wait and see.
The Mavs have the 37th overall pick in the draft, the 7th of the 2nd round. They got this pick in part because they did so poorly in the tiebreaker coin toss between the New Orleans Pelicans, Memphis Grizzlies and Mavs that took place after the regular season ended.
Dallas lost the coin toss, which theoretically cost them the 1st or 2nd overall pick in the draft. But at least they got the higher of the second round picks between the teams. Right?
Just because the Mavericks only have one pick in the draft at this time does not mean that it will stay that way. Last year, Dallas had the 5th, 33rd and 54th picks in the draft, but actually ended up getting the players selected 3rd, 33rd, 56th and 60th. Dallas is always looking to make moves, even if they are minor trades in the 2nd round of the draft.
Dallas will be making their pick in between the Charlotte Hornets and the Chicago Bulls. Although there are rumors floating around about what type of player the Mavs may be looking for in the draft, there is no clear target at this point. Dallas could use help on the wing, at center, on the glass and some defense which leaves the door wide open on draft prospects.
The NBA Draft will begin at 6:00pm central time and will be aired live on ESPN. The draft results will also be readily available on Twitter as many experts will be live tweeting the picks.
