. Duke. R.J. Barrett. . F. 2. 156

Duke man number two going with the 2nd overall pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers. R.J. Barrett had a heck of a season with the Blue Devils this year, averaging 22.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. He came in as the top ranked high school player in the country and proved to be an excellent scorer.

The Cavs are in need of a serious change in the coming years and since they drafted their point guard of the future with Collin Sexton last year, who ended up having a really solid season despite many being concerned with his playmaking ability. A pure scorer like Barrett could really help push Cleveland’s offense forward over the next several years.

Barrett’s strengths definitely start with his shooting. He is a great, streaky scorer who can fill up the stat sheet in a lot of categories. At 6’7″, Barrett is a prototypical wing with length that should be a more than serviceable defender if he can stay engaged. He is an above average rebounder and passer for his size and position as well.

His weaknesses are not really with his actual game for the most part. He looks lazy or disinterested at times on the court which may have led to Duke’s loss in March Madness. He was also a below average three-point shooter in his lone college season, shooting just over 30% on the year.

Player Comparison: DeMar DeRozan

Barrett and DeRozan are both great scorers from the paint and midrange but struggle a little from outside. They are tall, athletic wings who will always make their biggest impact on the offensive end.

(If Dallas had this pick, they would probably also take Barrett, but Ja Morant is a real possibility.)
