15. 64. . G. USC. Kevin Porter Jr..

Yet another player in the top half of the draft that missed out on the NCAA tournament. Kevin Porter Jr. was not as big of a star in this NCAA class as the names that have preceded him, but that does not mean he isn’t a capable player going forward. Although his college numbers should give a little concern, he has a lot of good qualities to his game.

The Detroit Pistons are looking for a backcourt playmaker in this draft as they relied heavily on the play of their power forward and center, Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond, respectively. Those two players combined for about 42 points a night, followed by a bunch of role players trying to find their spot.

Porter would be able to step in and immediately give the Pistons a guy that likes to create. Porter is one of the best players in the draft at creating off the dribble, something the Pistons could use seeing as they don’t have an elite passer on the team. Porter’s size and strength help him to get to the basket or create space when needed.

The main downside to Porter really is just how unimpressive he was in the NCAA. He averaged only 9.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game in 21 games. His shooting percentages were really good but he was not finding nearly enough looks from game to game which is a little confusing coming from a guy who creates many of his own shots.

Player Comparison: Jamal Crawford

Porter is bigger and stronger than Crawford, but both guys love to create space by themselves and pull up shots right in front of their defender. They both have good ball handling skills and sometimes can get wrapped up in their own game so much that they forget to look around and see what else is happening.
