Dallas Mavericks: What’s next for Trey Burke?
By Kohl Rast
The Dallas Mavericks are preparing to revamp the roster and that will start with saying goodbye to a few upcoming free agents. It is unclear who will be gone, but the players who will not be returning will surely be missed.
It is always weird seeing so many players come and go throughout the years. The Dallas Mavericks are about as fluid a team as there is in the league, constantly changing out pieces around their main guys. In fact, this year, they even changed out their main guys.
There is something even more weird about adding new players midseason and then only seeing them in your team’s uniform for a few short months. Once again, this is pretty commonplace around the league but it still always feels strange. I believe that will be the case when we have a better idea of what will be happening with Trey Burke.
Burke came to the Mavs via the Kristaps Porzingis trade in which Dallas got KP, Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee and Burke for Wesley Matthews, DeAndre Jordan, Dennis Smith Jr. and some future first round draft picks. Hardaway and Lee are both under contract for at least another year and the Mavs will definitely be bringing Porzingis back as well, leaving Burke the odd man out.
Rick Carlisle is notorious for having players in and out of the regular rotation without a word about it and that happened to Burke this year. When he first got to Dallas, Carlisle had him picking up regular minutes and he was immediately contributing off the bench. Then, we didn’t see him for a handful of games. For the last dozen games, he was back, averaging 21 minutes per game again.
As time went on, it became increasingly clear that Burke was likely not a part of the Mavs future plans. The intention of clearing cap space was made very clear and Burke is not a guy that is going to be taking a minimum level contract, knowing what he can provide for a team.
The future is still hopeful for Burke. He has bounced around from a few different teams in his six year career so far and he has shown what he can bring to a game. There are absolutely going to be teams out there interested in Burke’s skillset and I assume he will have multiple teams pursuing him.
Although we didn’t have him for long, we enjoyed the time we did get to watch and cheer for Trey Burke. If he is no longer with the Mavericks going forward, we wish him the best of luck and if he is with the Mavs, he will be cheered on in full every chance the fans get. All I know for sure is that free agency can’t get here soon enough.
