Up in the Air

J.J. Barea – Barea is a hero in Dallas, thanks to his amazing play during the 2011 NBA playoffs in which he showed just what he is capable of. Ever since then, (and really since his return to Dallas in 2014), Barea has continually been playing great basketball at a high level and has really never taken a step back from his incredible production. Now the Mavs have to make a call on a 33-year old 6’0″ point guard coming off of an achilles tear.

Devin Harris – The rumors that Harris might be planning on retirement this summer were finally addressed by Devin himself last week in which he said he does plan on being back in the league next year. Harris still represents a solid veteran presence who can make big plays on both ends of the floor, but he is nowhere near as reliable as he once was. The Mavs will have some tough decisions regarding both Harris and Barea for next year.

Kostas Antetokounmpo – Kostas still represents an abundance of potential for the Mavericks going forward and I think that they would be smart to keep him around at least for another year to watch for signs of growth. The chance of him becoming what his older brother has become is pretty unlikely, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have potential in the league going forward.

Ryan Broekhoff – I would love to see Ryan Broekhoff get a chance to become a sharpshooter for the Mavs that can come in off the bench as instant offense. Unfortunately, I’m not sure the Mavs have the roster space to hold onto him and to continue to help him grow. He should be rostered in the NBA, but Dallas may not be the location for him going forward.

Courtney Lee – If the Mavericks are able to get off of Courtney Lee’s contract this summer, they will probably do it. Lee has been another body to throw on the court late in the season, but he does not represent any sort of player the Mavs have plans with going forward and his $12 million owed could definitely go to better uses for the team.
