This trade scenario makes some sense for both teams. The additions of Harrison Barnes and Dennis Smith Jr. to a Memphis team looking for a new identity could go a long way. Barnes offers a wing presence the team has not had in several years and DSJ gives them a young point guard to grow along with Jaren Jackson.
For the Mavericks, Mike Conley becomes a clear cut 2nd option to Luka Doncic who can score and make plays on a regular basis. Conley is a solid defender and a playmaker that Luka hasn’t had the chance to play with yet. Although Conley is getting older, he is still a very good guard and one that can help push the Mavs into playoff relevance through the rest of the season and into next year.
This trade would work for the Mavs because, even though they would be losing two starters and replacing them with only one, the team has options coming off the bench that could fit into the starting lineup with ease. If Conley was coming to replace Dennis Smith Jr. in the starting lineup, Dorian Finney-Smith or Maxi Kleber would be great replacements for Barnes.
For the Grizzlies, they get off the monster contract that is Mike Conley and get a couple younger players for more reasonable deals. Harrison Barnes has flashed potential as a number two option on a solid team while Dennis Smith Jr. has a very high ceiling that could hit at any time. It would help give Memphis a new identity.
This trade makes a lot of sense for both teams but it seems like an unlikely deal for the Mavs to make. The Grizzlies would probably be more inclined to accept it.
