Dallas Mavericks rookie forward Luka Doncic is averaging over 20 points per game after his first 11 NBA contests and more Mavs news.

Dallas Mavericks rookie Luka Doncic is scoring the ball better than any fan dreamed of after 11 games.  After his 24 point performance against the Jazz on Nov. 7, Doncic is averaging 20.2 points per game which ranks 27th in the NBA.  That alone is impressive.

Going further, rookies do not score 20 a night in this league.  Since 2000, eight first-year players have reached that threshold for the season according to Basketball-Reference.  The talent on that list is quite impressive too.  LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Blake Griffin, Joel Embiid, Donovan Mitchell, Tyreke Evans, and Elton Brand are the players to accomplish that feat.  That alone puts Doncic in some rare company if he can sustain his pace for the entire season.

Luka’s shooting percentages suggest that it may not last.  His 47.9 percent field goal percentage would rank third among that group.  His 2-point (53.8 percent) and 3-point (40.3) percentages would both be the highest.

It will be a treat to watch the Wonder Boy the rest of the season regardless.  He is performing exceptionally.  When fans take into account that Luka Doncic is still 19 years old, it likely means the Mavericks have a superstar on their hands.

Will Brunson stick in the rotation?

Fellow Mavs rookie Jalen Brunson is showing plenty in his first 11 games too.  Brunson has the look of a role player in the NBA for the next decade.  His numbers are not eye-popping, but Brunson just makes the right play.  The Villanova product can shoot threes and be a playmaker as well.

It will be worth watching to see if Brunson stays in the rotation when Devin Harris returns from his hamstring injury.  They both are deserving of minutes, but Coach Carlisle may only have room in the rotation for one of them.  It is a storyline to follow over the next few days.

Expect Brunson to play a stint with the Texas Legends if Harris knocks him from the Mavericks rotation.
