Dallas Mavericks: Dirk Nowitzki scrimmages: On track for training camp

Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki played in a pick-up game on Sept. 5 and is on track to be fully ready for the upcoming season.

Dallas Mavericks GOAT Dirk Nowitzki saw last season end prematurely with an ankle injury and subsequent surgery.  The health of the 40-year-old has been a talking point all summer long.  Well, a bit of good news came Mavs fans way on Sept. 5.

Dirk participated in a scrimmage with some of his Mavericks teammates on Wednesday.  That marks the first live-action the big German has seen since last April.

Having Dirk Nowitzki on the court already is fantastic news for Mavs fans.  Dallas is still two weeks away from training camp opening and just under six weeks out from their regular season opener.

What to expect this season

The entire organization will monitor Dirk’s workload in his 21st season.  Nowitzki likely sees limited action this preseason.  Once the games begin to count, expect Nowitzki to play around 25 minutes per game and continue his efficient and productive play.

The big man may see the occasional rest game, but expect Dirk to push to play every night in an effort to guide the Mavs to the playoff for the first time since 2016.

Final thoughts

Dirk Nowitzki participated in a scrimmage for the first time since his April left ankle surgery.  That is a massive step on the road to a fully healthy Dirk entering this season.  The Mavs will likely treat him with care during camp, but expect the big German to be ready for the regular season opener.
