2. DJ could be a Maverick after 2019

Don’t let this deal fool you into believing the Mavs are disinterested in DeAndre, long term. If Dallas feels like DJ can give them the years they want from him, he will likely be back for another deal after this one. Don’t expect Jordan to settle for another one year deal, but do expect him to want a return to Dallas.

DeAndre Jordan’s playing style perfectly fits what Rick Carlisle wants on offense and defense. There is a reason that the Mavs were willing to offer him max money three years ago and that is the same reason the two sides agreed to a deal this morning. The Mavs are going to be looking for loyalty and a good locker room presence. I believe they will get it this time around.

On the other hand, Jordan could be looking for one of two things. The first thing I think he may be looking for is a situation for him to maximize his talents. With Luka and Dennis manning the guard positions and Harrison Barnes still steadily improving, the focus won’t be on Jordan, but he will be a menace for the opposing team. There may not be a better coach in the league at drawing up alley-oop opportunities.

The other thing is Jordan will eventually want to join a team that is ready to compete. That may not be the Mavs this year, but it could be the Mavs soon.

Something else to consider is that Wesley Matthews and DeAndre Jordan wanted to join forces at one point. Maybe they can help each other push to strengthen their careers as they enter the late stages of their time in the NBA. There is a possibility that the Mavs are everything that DJ needs to get what he wants out of his career.
