NBA mock draft 5.0 – Best available player edition
By Kohl Rast
At number 10 on this list, we have Trae Young, the leading points and assists man in the NCAA last year. As far as the votes received for Young, he ranged anywhere from 7th to 13th across the staff writers.
Trae Young is probably the most awkward fit of the draft to this point, as him being a point guard and needing the ball in his hands would not fit well with the likes of Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz. Young would be much better suited somewhere like New York, Cleveland, or even Orlando. Young will need to play a true point guard to be effective in the NBA and this team would not give him that opportunity.
Right after Young, we have the next best point guard in the draft, Collin Sexton. Sexton played one year at Alabama and showed that he was a very explosive player with game changing capabilities. For the votes, Sexton got as high as 9 and as low as 13. At this point you are definitely into another tier of players.
I think Sexton would fit well with this team, especially if they are serious about moving Kemba Walker. Sexton would be a different point guard and would give them the ability to steer clear of the big contract that Kemba will be due for in the near future. Either way, Charlotte is a good place for Sexton.
The first 11 names on the list have been mentioned as the top prospects in the draft for sometime and should really not be a surprise. However, one of the names that has made a big move up the board is Lonnie Walker IV. Walker received votes from seven of the 11 writers who contributed.
Walker would be a fine fit for the Clippers who are really looking to make some changes this summer. A hard-nosed guard like Walker can make a big improvement to a team but he will need the ball in his hands a lot. Walker will do well with the Clippers but definitely has some room to grow as time goes on.
