3. Jason Kidd
Kicking things off with a player who spent his best years outside of Dallas, Jason Kidd was one of the best picks the Mavs ever made. This is based more on his success as a player than his success with the team.
In 1994, a year after the Mavs picked Jamal Mashburn and two years after Jim Jackson, the Mavs did even better, picking Jason Kidd with the 2nd overall pick. Kidd has undoubtedly cemented himself as the best player from that draft class and is an NBA Hall of Famer for a reason. During his 19 year NBA career, Kidd quickly cemented himself as one of the best point guards in the league.
His court vision is some of the best the NBA has ever seen and he was an excellent defender and serviceable scorer. The thing that made Jason Kidd one of the best, though, was his role as the general on the court. As one of the smartest players to ever play basketball, Kidd knew what to do and when to do it.
Jason Kidd had many achievements throughout his career. He was a 10-time All-Star, 6-time All-NBA, 9-time All-Defense, 5-time assist champ, Rookie of the Year, and 1-time NBA Champion with the Mavs. As mentioned above, he was also a first ballot Hall of Famer.
Kidd posted career averages of 12.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 8.7 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. He played for four different teams in his career and made an All-Star team with three of them. Kidd was one of the best picks Dallas ever made in the draft.
