The NBA Midseason Rankings- Shooting Guards
By Kohl Rast
20. Justin Holiday (CHI)
stats: 13.7 ppg, 2.3 apg, 4.6 rpg, 1.1 spg, 1.3 tov
Holiday has been one of the bright spots to a very tough season in Chicago. Despite being a player who has been irrelevant most of his career, he has found his place with the Bulls, who needed someone to step in for the departed Jimmy Butler. Obviously he was never going to fill those shoes, but he hasn’t done a bad job.
19. Wesley Matthews (DAL)
stats: 12.2 ppg, 2.9 apg, 3.1 rpg, 1.1 spg, 1.4 tov
Wesley Matthews is such a tough player to get a read on. Sometimes he can make you feel like every dollar of his contract is deserved. Then he will go 1-12 from three-point the very next game. His ranking is largely because of his inconsistency, but when he is on, he can be very dangerous.
18. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (LAL)
stats: 13.7 ppg, 2.1 apg, 4.8 rpg, 1.7 spg, 1.4 tov
The Lakers have put together a lot of talent on their roster this year, and siging KCP has been a good addition for them. He has become pretty consistent over his last few seasons and has blossomed on both ends of the court. Still, the depth of talent at the shooting guard position is no joke.
17. Avery Bradley (DET)
stats: 15.7 ppg, 2.1 apg, 2.4 rpg, 1.2 spg, 2.4 tov
The former Boston Celtic has had a very respectable season so far and continues to shoot the ball pretty well. Detroit really needs good shooters around Andre Drummond and Bradley is becoming the top option for the Pistons. His defense is still great, but Detroit still needs him to do a little more to get involved.
16. J.J. Redick (PHI)
stats: 17.3 ppg, 3.3 apg, 2.8 rpg, 0.5 spg, 1.5 tov
The sharpshooter finally made his way out of LA and is doing some great things in Philly. Not only is he at a career high for points, but his involvement in the offense is also improving. His defense remains his weak point, however, and keeps him out of the conversation for top 10-12 shooting guards.
15. Jaylen Brown (BOS)
stats: 14.2 ppg, 1.4 apg, 5.6 rpg, 1.1 spg, 1.7 tov
The Celtics are an anomaly of a team this year. Not only have they been able to lead the East despite losing arguably their 2nd best player for the season, they also have been able to rely heavily on some young players. Jaylen Brown is one of those youngsters that has found his place on both ends of the court. The Celtics have a good one.
14. Evan Fournier (ORL)
stats: 17.9 ppg, 2.9 apg, 3.3 rpg, 0.9 spg, 2.0 tov
Another one of those players that have really blossomed this year, Evan Fournier has been shooting lights out this season. Although the Magic have really struggled this year, it has been impressive what Fournier has been able to accomplish. If he does get traded, he could move up this list.
13. Gary Harris (DEN)
stats: 17.1 ppg, 3.3 apg, 2.8 rpg, 2.0 spg, 1.9 tov
The youngster for the Nuggets has become yet another important puzzle piece for the almost completed Denver puzzle. He has integrated himself perfectly into the offense and has become a very impressive young player. The sky is the limit for Harris, who is severely underrated in the current league.
12. Jrue Holiday (NOP)
stats: 18.6 ppg, 5.1 apg, 4.4 rpg, 1.5 spg, 2.7 tov
The shooting guard classification for Holiday is interesting considering most would call him a point guard, but such is the NBA in its current state, where Mavs fans have seen Yogi Ferrell playing small forward on occasion. Even still, Holiday is an incredibly talented player and, seeing as he has stayed pretty healthy so far this season, things are looking up for the veteran.
11. Donovan Mitchell (UTAH)
stats: 19.2 ppg, 3.4 apg, 3.3 rpg, 1.5 spg, 2.6 tov
The steal of the 2017 NBA Draft, Donovan Mitchell may have started the season a little bit slow, but has been anything but that since. Now the playmaker for a Jazz team in desperate need of one, Mitchell has proven himself as a great player and a leading candidate to take home the Rookie of the Year award.
