Josh Huestis

Why the Mavs should try to get Huestis: Possibly one of the lesser known players in the league, Huestis is finally getting a chance to make a splash in the NBA. After staying in the D-League and/or riding the bench for the majority of his first two seasons, he has been a regular player off the bench for Oklahoma City.

Huestis shows a lot of potential as a great wing defender as well as someone who could be relied on to score some points, grab some rebounds, and generally be a well-rounded player. These are the types of players that thrive well in Coach Carlisle’s system and the type that he praises openly. It would be a great fit for Dallas.

Why the Mavs should not go for Huestis: There is definitely an element of unproven basketball from Huestis but it is getting less noticeable every game. He will also be a free agent this summer, so making a trade for him would be risky as the Mavs would be limited in the amount of money they could offer him.

Why the Thunder should let Huestis go: If the Timberwolves have an entire window of possibility to take the Western Conference, the OKC Thunder may have more of a peephole. That said, they definitely have a team that could make a run. Adding one more player like a Wes Matthews or even Devin Harris to that team would make a big difference and could help push them towards a real threat in the west. Huestis would be a casualty of war.

Why the Thunder should hold on to Huestis: The future is very confusing for the Thunder who don’t know if Carmelo Anthony and Paul George will be sticking around for very long. This would turn a team of superstars into a team of question marks. So, do the Thunder swing for the fences for one year and hope? Or play it safe and develop the youngsters?
