Patty Mills

As much as the Dallas Mavericks and Mavs fans hate the San Antonio Spurs, there are always a lot of players that they let go of each year that Dallas should think about pursuing. A few of their players will be on the free agent market this summer and they won’t be able to retain all of them for another year.

For that reason, I think the Mavericks should be giving Patty Mills a call. The Spurs are going to be looking to add a strong starting point guard and Patty Mills does not quite fit the build on that. However, that does not mean he should be overlooked by the Mavericks. Mills is 28 years old and has had an interesting NBA career so far, but his skill set is something the Mavs could consider pursuing.

The big thing to love about Mills is obviously his ability to shoot. Patty Mills can shoot the lights out of the gym on a good day, but he is also a good passer when he needs to be. His fit wouldn’t be perfect, but if he were stepping into the role that J.J. Barea and Devin Harris currently play, it could be a nice little fit.

The Mavs would like to have a guy like Patty Mills, not just to stick it to the Spurs, but also because of his offensive abilities. Dallas is looking for a great starting point guard and Mills might not be that, but he could be a killer backup if the opportunity arose. He also would have a likely spot as the 6th man with the team, giving him a lot of opportunity.

Patty Mills would like it in Dallas if he doesn’t get a contract renewal or the money he thinks he deserves from SA. The Spurs are expected to be in a lot of point guard talks this summer which would make Mills the odd man out and ready to go. He could find a safe home in Dallas where his game would be on display every night.

This one would not work, as I mentioned above, if the Spurs decide to bring Mills back. There really is no reason to believe that he would not go back to San Antonio if the offer was there, but crazier things have happened. I just expect to see him in a Spurs jersey if that is what Coach Popovich wants.
