Dallas Mavericks Win Nail-biter Vs. Portland Trail Blazers
By Evan Siegel
The Dallas Mavericks win again! Dallas takes down the Trail Blazers for the 4th consecutive win and 9 of the last 12, thanks to big games from Wesley Matthews and…Yogi Ferrell.
Yogi Ferrell led the Mavs to an important win over the Trailblazers on the road Friday night, notching a stunning 32 points including 9 three-balls to stymie the Portland Trail Blazers rally in the fourth quarter.
Ferrell got off to a hot start against his matchup Damian Lillard, scoring eleven of his thirty two in the opening period. The rookie phenom starred in just his fourth game as a Maverick and only in his seventh day of a ten-day contract.
Wesley Matthews was another hero for the Mavericks against his former team. Scoring 27 points including several important shots late in the game were critical towards securing the Mavs’ 20th win of the season. Harrison Barnes had a relatively quiet night, scoring 13 points on 6-14 shooting.
Dirk Nowitzki nailed a vintage trail three-ball from the top of the key deep in the game which showed shades of his former self. Despite adding only 9 points, Dirk was pivotal in creating passing lanes and shooting opportunities for Ferrell and Matthews down the stretch.
The Mavs have now won four straight and are slowly beginning to creep back towards .500. The Mavs are at the part of the season when games against Western Conference opponents become significantly more important and patience cannot be preached in the same fashion. Dallas seems to be hitting a true stride, as they have won four in a row and 9 out of their last 12. Since their 2-13 start to the season, the Mavs are 18-17.
The one thing that the Mavs must remember going forward, however, is that they cannot simply shoot their way to wins. Ferrell blew everyone out of the gym with 9 three-pointers and Seth Curry and Wesley Matthews each provided key shots down the stretch. The Mavs must be more consistent offensively and find true penetration. Harrison Barnes and Wesley Matthews can only do so much offensively for the Mavs, which makes Ferrell and Seth Curry the keys going forward for the streaking Mavs.
There has not been this positive a buzz around the Mavs organization so far this season. A clutch victory over their Western Conference opponents gives Mavs fans a reason to continue to pursue a playoff spot and a young budding star in Yogi Ferrell who has become the team’s new fan favorite. The Mavs will shoot for their fifth in a row Monday night against the Nuggets at 8:00PM CT.
