What’s Up With Chandler Parsons’ Knee?

Chandler Parsons had an up-and-down, but overall pretty solid first year in Dallas before suffering a mysterious knee injury late in the regular season that cut his playoffs short and required surgery.

Not mysterious like Rajon Rondo‘s “back injury” that ended his tenure with the Mavericks, more like, “what’s really wrong with that knee?”.

That information has been kept under tight wraps by the Mavericks, and for a while there I’m not so sure even they knew. But when Parsons missed all but one postseason game against the Houston Rockets the always troubling “microfracture” word started being thrown around like fish at Pike Place.

The Mavericks announced that Parsons had arthroscopic surgery on May 1st, which should have quelled any fear of the dreaded “m” word. But almost a month later the exact circumstances of the injury and its remedy are as murky and clouded as ever. All we know for sure is that the almost 27-year old small forward might not be ready by the start of training camp.

That in itself practically screams, “MICROFRACTURE SURGERY!” rather than the announced arthroscopic, but not as much as this tidbit from Eddie Sefko:

Worst fears: confirmed. Maybe.

We just don’t know. But what we do know is that any success the Mavericks intend to achieve next season hinges largely on Parsons. He’s their highest paid player, and at times last season was their best player. He was poised for an even larger role in the offense next season, and his health could be a factor in his effectiveness as a recruiter this summer.

Looks like we’ll have to play the waiting game to find out for sure what’s going on with Parsons’ knee and how it will affect his game and Dallas’ offseason plans. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery from…whatever happened.
