NBA Playoffs: Potential Free Agent Targets for the Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks are out of the playoffs, but it doesn’t mean the Mavs’ brass isn’t paying attention.

There are plenty of upcoming free agents still playing, and could be making a case to entice the Mavericks this summer.

Shooting Guard

With Monta Ellis (Player Option) possibly hitting the market, the Mavericks could look to bring in a new starting shooting guard.

Restricted free agent Jimmy Butler highlights the group. But unless Dallas can stun the Chicago Bulls as they did Houston, it’s unlikely he won’t don a Bulls uniform next season. Behind him, the starting options are slim to none.

Iman Shumpert, (Restricted FA), J.R. Smith (Player Option), Jamal Crawford (Team Option), and Jason Terry round out the list.

Point Guard

The Mavs, AGAIN, need a starting point guard. The market is slim, and it’s unlikely any of the remaining options that are still competing will even be considered as a solution at the position.

Aaron Brooks, Kirk Hinrich (PO), and Beno Udrih (PO) are the faces of the position.

Patrick Beverley isn’t playing, but may be the best and most realistic option for the Mavericks this summer.

Small Forward

After LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Gordan Hayward, and Chandler Parsons highlighted the SF market last season, it’s possible that this summer’s class could be as star-filled.

Parsons has the position locked down, but Rick Carlisle could look to get creative and possibly move him or a potentially new small forward to shooting guard.

James has the option to hit the market once again. Draymond Green (RFA) and Jeff Green (PO) are best suited at power forward, but can slide over to SF in a pinch.

Paul Pierce, Corey Brewer, and Mike Miller all have Player Options.

DaMarre Carroll has starred for Atlanta in this postseason and could defend either wing position.

Mike Dunleavy Jr., James Jones, and Dahntay Jones are also set to hit the market.

Power Forward

Dirk Nowitkzi’s days of carrying the Mavs are winding down, and the team will need to find reliable power forward that can cut Nowitzki’s minutes down, or even possibly start over him.

Paul Millsap is the biggest name in the postseason at PF with Kevin Love out.

Tristan Thompson (RFA) will be looking for a big payday. Josh Smith, Glen Davis, Drew Gooden, and Marreese Speights are still playing key roles for their teams.

Center

We would think that the Mavericks would have learned their lesson from last time, but with a deep center market, their decision on Tyson Chandler will, once again, be a tough one.

Marc Gasol and DeAndre Jordan each had big seasons and have been vital this postseason.

Timofy Mozgov (TO) is unlikely to hit the market with his friendly deal. Kosta Koufos, Epke Udoh, Kedrick Perkins, Brendan Haywood (TO), and Kevin Seraphin complete the center position.
