Dallas Mavericks' most valuable trade assets: 5. 2025 first-round pick

The Mavs technically cannot trade their 2025 first-round pick because of pick protections from the original Kristaps Porzingis trade. NBA teams cannot trade first-round picks in consecutive drafts, and dealing unprotected choices is most appealing to opposing teams. Assuming their 2023 first round conveys to New York, the Mavs will have this pick to trade, but it is slightly less valuable because they cannot trade it unprotected.

Dallas Mavericks' most valuable trade assets: 4. 2029 first-round pick unprotected

Dallas Mavericks' most valuable trade assets: 3. 2027 first-round pick unprotected

The Mavs have two first-round picks that they can trade unprotected right now. Teams are not eager to acquire their draft choices because of Luka Doncic. The 23-year-old is a walking playoff appearance, and most teams believe their picks will fall in the 20s.

Trading picks five to seven years down the line opens the door for the opposition to convince themselves that things could go wrong in Dallas, and they could have a selection near the top of a distant draft. Rebuilding teams love to stockpile draft picks, so these two would be hot commodities on the trade market if Dallas goes star hunting next summer.

The Mavs could trade four picks and three swaps for a second star after the 2023 draft, assuming their first-round pick conveys to the Knicks. Will GM Nico Harrison wait for the opportunity? Can the Mavericks find the right second star that makes Dallas an annual title contender? It is something to watch moving forward.
