Dallas Mavericks surprising stats so far: 1. Defense

Head coach Jason Kidd made improving the team’s defense a priority during training camp after the Mavs finished 21st in defensive rating last season. They want to jump into title contention, which means working their way into a top ten team on both ends of the floor. Luka Doncic is no stranger to running an elite offense, but the team’s defense has been lacking during his tenure in Dallas.

The Mavericks currently sit 14th in defensive rating at 105.6. Oddly, that number would have led the NBA last season. It is way too early to tell where they’ll finish, but there have been some positives.

Kristaps Porzingis is back protecting the rim and looking like the Unicorn. He has six blocks and allowed the opposition to shoot just 22.2 percent within six feet of the basket thus far. Early signs suggest a massive comeback from KP.

The Dallas Mavericks are still perfecting new head coach Jason Kidd’s defensive scheme, but they are creating more turnovers, contesting additional shots, and playing with increase energy on that end of the floor. If the Mavs finish in the top half of the league on the defensive end, they are going to continue climbing the standings.

It is still early, and fans should not panic. The Mavericks have had plenty of positive signs in the first two games. They play four in the week ahead, including three against teams expected to be outside the playoff race in the Western Conference. Be sure to tune in and see how the team is performing.
